This Fall, Write for Professional Choir — and More

The Wizarding School for Composers is pleased to announce its partnership with the professional choir Brevitas to record student compositions in its fall 2023 session, sponsored by Dorico. Running August 28-December 13, the course is designed for composers who want to hone their artistic voice, improve their creative process, and grow their careers.

The course is of special interest to choral composers and choral musicians who want to solidify their composing chops.

Students will take part in the following collaborations, resulting in 3 recordings and one performance of their music:

  • Pianist Dr. Benjamin Wong, Students will write him a new prelude as part of a set written by the fall 2023 Wizarding School cohort.

  • The Oboe Studio of Jennet Ingle. Jennet Ingle is principal oboist of the South Bend Symphony and host of the podcast Crushing Classical. Students will be paired with one of her students to collaborate on a new piece for their December recital.

  • Brevitas. Founded and led by Dr. Matthew Nielsen, Brevitas is a professional choir that has recorded four albums, including one that debuted at No. 16 on the iTunes Classical Charts. You will write for an octet from Brevitas, to be recorded in Los Angeles.

In addition to making these recordings, students will participate in group workshops, private lessons, career development sessions, and masterclasses with nationally acclaimed choral directors who will give students feedback on their pieces:

  • Dr. Joshua Habermann, director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus and Santa Fe Desert Chorale

  • Dr. J.D. Burnett, founding Artisitic Director of the Kinnara ensemble and director of choral activities at UT Austin

  • Dr. Matthew Nielsen, composer and founding artistic director of Brevitas

Students also learn the counterpoint and harmony skills famed pedagogue Nadia Boulanger used to turn Aaron Copland, Astor Piazzolla, Quincy Jones and dozens more into world-renowned composers through 12 live workshops taught by partimenti expert Ian Campbell so you don’t waste time fumbling for notes.

Participants also receive a free, 120-day trial of Steinberg's Dorico, along with a student discount if they wish to purchase the full version.

The Application Deadline is August 31, 2023.
